Gelco Crown Repair: The Paterson Owner’s Guide

Signs Your Gelco Crown Repair Is Failing

• Hairline cracks across the crown surface. These are the earliest warning. In Paterson’s weather, any crack wider than a nickel lets water in. Once water penetrates, the freeze-thaw cycle does the rest, and hairline cracks become structural cracks within one to two winters.

• Water in the firebox or a damp smell after rain. By the time water shows up in the firebox, the crown has been failing for a while and the water is working its way down through the flue system, not just across the top of the brick.
• Visible cracks around the flue tile opening. The concrete ring where the flue tile exits the crown is a common early failure point. When it separates, water runs directly down the gap between the flue tile and the crown, into the chase, bypassing the brick entirely.
