You can safely inspect your crown from the ground with binoculars, or from an upper window. Look for cracks, spalling, or moss growth. What you shouldn’t do is get on the roof. Crown work means being at the very top of the chimney, on a sloped or flat roof surface, working with wet concrete and a trowel. Falls from chimney height are serious, and the angle at the crown is worse than it looks from below.
